Brendan Fernandes: Hybrid Heredities
Brendan Fernandes “From Hiz Hands” 2010 Exterior installation view / Courtesy Art in General, New York
“A sense of animism pervades his work,” says writer Pandora Syperek of emerging artist Brendan Fernandes in our Spring 2011 feature “The Nature of Culture.” A Canadian-art wunderkind—he completed the Independent Study Program at New York’s Whitney Museum in his late 20s and was on the shortlist for the prestigious Sobey Art Award last year—Fernandes explores postcolonial identity through the lens of his own hybrid experience growing up under the influence of South Asian, African and Canadian cultures. This bonus portfolio provides a comprehensive view of Fernandes’ show at New York’s Art in General last fall, entitled “From Hiz Hands.”
