Sobey Finalists 2009: Marcel Dzama
Nobody expected a small collective of art students from the depths of darkest Winnipeg to take over the art world. But the Royal Art Lodge did just that, growing into an international phenomenon from a humble home base. Marcel Dzama, the best known co-founder of the collective, has also gone on to a prolific solo career, branching out from eccentric root-beer-inked drawings into ceramics, sculpture, video and installation in recent years. For the 2009 Sobey Art Award, Dzama is representing the region of the Prairies and the North. This 10-image slide portfolio spans the artist’s drawings and sketchbook pages through to ceramic dioramas and costumed dance videos.
