Jason de Haan: Fanning the Future
Artist Jason de Haan has made his mark in recent years with artworks that simultaneously embrace the past and aim at the future. This new show in Edmonton at Latitude 53 is no exception. An exhibition of recent sculptural installations and works on paper, “Future Future Age(s)” crosses Dawson City’s northern lights with mirrored tiles, petrified wood and a stripped tree trunk inset with gold. The result is a set of metaphysical explorations about “how we imagine the so-called natural order as malleable.” In an accompanying interview with Calgary artist Kris Lindskoog posted on the gallery website, de Haan says, “I work with natural tendencies, steer the known into the imaginable, creating glimpses into the unknown, the future. There is the possibility to capture and conserve both nature’s immensity and its miniature. There is no secret, just potential.” If that sounds serious, he reminds Lindskoog that “mystics come in all shapes and sizes, tones and colours.”
