News: Gardiner Museum Marks 25 Years
The Gardiner Museum, the only specialized ceramics museum in Canada, marks its 25th anniversary this year with a smart lineup of shows and events. Created by Canadian collectors and philanthropists George and Helen Gardiner, the institution is one of the world’s great specialty museums, and its expanding permanent collection and exhibition roster includes a growing number of major contemporary artists. This month, visitors to the museum can see White Fright, a highlight silver-anniversary acquisition from the Toronto-based artist Shary Boyle, who in recent years has brought vibrant new directions to the historical craft of porcelain. Boyle’s work joins strong contemporary ceramics works in the collection from Steven Heinemann and Gertraud Möhwald, among others. Also showing through the summer is “Clay Canvases,” an exhibition organized by chief curator Charles Mason that looks at links between painting and ceramics since the Renaissance. It includes some surprising works by Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Karel Appel and Grayson Perry. (111 Queen’s Park, Toronto ON)
