David Burdeny: Diminishing Shelf Life
In his exhibition “Greenland/Antarctica,” Vancouver-based photographer David Burdeny turns his camera on the precarious situation of polar ice caps in an age of rapid climate change. Though largely self-taught as a photographer, Burdeny here produces an exhibition that stands as one of the highlights of the 2008 CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival.

David Burdeny Midday Grey, Antarctica 2007 |
Reflecting his graduate studies in architecture, Burdeny’s colour photographs of floating icebergs capture impressive architectonic ice forms adrift in the planet’s warming seas. Shooting in the dramatic light of dawn and dusk, using extended exposures from two minutes to several hours, he exposes landscapes that are poised between just beginning and nearly ending.
