Welcome to Gallery Hop Web Week: Chats, Videos, Sneak Peeks & More
During the 2008 Canadian Art Gallery Hop, artist John Eisler gave a talk at Diaz Contemporary. This year's roster of gallery talks is supplemented by daily audio and video updates during Gallery Hop week at canadianart.ca.
Canadian Art magazine is celebrating 25 years this fall, and as part of the silver-anniversary celebrations canadianart.ca is posting daily text, audio and video updates during Gallery Hop week.
Each day of updates offers behind-the-scenes insights into the people and places that make Canadian art such an exciting and vital field to explore.
Today’s video update features Allyson Mitchell, one of Canada’s most vibrant and critically minded artists. In an exclusive interview, Mitchell reveals the way that Canadian Art magazine—and its presence in an overseas embassy—has assisted in the development of her identity as an artist.

WEDNESDAY: THE STORY OF CANADIAN ART
There are many worthwhile histories of Canadian art—but few to none about Canadian Art magazine. In a special Wednesday essay, former Canadian Art editor Jocelyn Laurence reveals the sometimes rocky, always rewarding road towards creating a stable national art magazine. A slideshow of wonderful archival covers will accompany, along with a video interview with Michael de Pencier, one of the original publishers of Canadian Art.

THURSDAY: GALA GOODIES
Canadian Art’s annual gala fundraiser happens on Thursday evening, and on that day we’ll be posting all the must-know facts for cocktail chatter: a profile of Calgary-born, Los Angeles–based artist Ryan Sluggett, who’s created a new work for the gala using the magazine’s archives; an audio interview with Sluggett’s dealer Yves Trépanier on this rising CanArt star; and a video chat with Olga Korper, who recalls the very first Canadian Art Gallery Hop Gala—held in her own gallery 14 years ago.

FRIDAY: FINDING CANADA’S ART FUTURES
Anniversaries aren’t just a time for looking back to the past; more than anything, they’re a time to look forward to the future. Friday offers an audio interview with respected artist Emily Vey Duke, who will be speaking on the theme of promise and the art world in the Gallery Hop’s weekend panel. Also on tap is a video chat with Art Gallery of Ontario director Matthew Teitelbaum as he reflects on generations of growth and change in the national art scene. It’s all a great appetizer for the Gallery Hop’s tours and talks on Saturday, which will take in the best of current Toronto artists and artworks and wrap up with a free silver-anniversary celebration and issue launch in the evening.
New content will be posted at 1pm EDT each day. For more information about this year's Gallery Hop events, visit canadianart.ca/galleryhop.
