Ross King Lecture: From Manitoba to Matisse
On Thursday, March 25, at 7pm at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, bestselling author Ross King delivers a much-anticipated lecture on the Group of Seven’s influential (but until recently, overlooked) experiences in Europe. The talk—like the related book, which is to follow in fall 2010 along with a future exhibition at the McMichael—promises an adept melding of King’s interests and experiences. Though the UK-based King is best known for revelatory books on European art history, like 2006’s award-winningThe Judgment of Paris and 2000’s Brunelleschi's Dome (a New York Times bestseller), he was raised in Saskatchewan and originally studied art in Regina. Here, in a December chat with Canadian Art editor Richard Rhodes, King talks about his early experiences in art and life and discusses the factors that led him to reexamine the iconic Group of Seven’s story.
