Ross King Audio: From Prairie Grasslands to the Group of Seven
Last week, bestselling author Ross King delivered a much-anticipated Toronto lecture on the Group of Seven’s influential (but until now overlooked) experiences in Europe. The talk—like the related book, which is to follow in fall 2010 along with an exhibition at the McMichael—offered an adept melding of King’s interests and experiences. Though the UK-based King is best known for revelatory books on European art history, like 2006’s The Judgment of Paris and 2008’s Brunelleschi's Dome, he was raised in Saskatchewan and originally studied art in Regina. Here, in a pre-lecture chat with Canadian Art editor Richard Rhodes, King talks about his early experiences in art and life and discusses the factors that led him to reexamine the iconic Group of Seven’s story.
