Begin your day with an engaging conversation between artist Myfanwy MacLeod and Reid Shier, Director/Curator of Presentation House Gallery, about MacLeod’s public sculpture, The Birds (2010), commissioned by the City of Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Program. MacLeod will share the process of creating the monumental sculpture, speak about The Birds within the context of her practice, and discuss her new work. Myfanwy MacLeod is a multidisciplinary, widely exhibited Vancouver artist who has represented Canada at international biennials. She is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery. Reid Shier is the Director/Curator of Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver. Since 1996, Shier has curated over eighty exhibitions and edited numerous publications and catalogues. He is a practicing artist and critical writer. |

End your day with a special double screening of two films that explore Chinese contemporary art. In October 2010, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei filled the interior of the Turbine Hall at London’s Tate Modern with 100 million hand-crafted porcelain sunflower seeds. Ai Weiwei: Sunflower Seeds offers the viewer a rare glimpse into the production of this installation, from the porcelain mines to the workshops in Jingdezhen and finally to the Tate Modern, where the seeds are poured into the Turbine Hall.

China, the Empire of Art? traces the events leading up to the rise of the Chinese contemporary art scene, which has undergone a radical transformation over the last two decades. The film features interviews with renowned artists who have contributed to fueling this boom, including Zhang Huan, Yue Minjun and Yan Pei-Ming, and with curators Hou Hanru and Jerome Sans.
