2006 Youth Arts Bursary Recipients
"OUTREACH" Program
Gallery 44 - Centre for Contemporary Photography
Toronto, Ontario
Gallery 44 was awarded the bursary for the creation of their OUTREACH program designed to break down barriers and encourage youth to understand the creative process and the power of the photographic image. Working with five non-profit community organizations, OUTREACH has provided Gallery 44 with an opportunity to remove themselves from formal school systems and provide needed programs for marginalized youth.
Art Gallery of York University (AGYU)
Toronto, Ontario
The AGYU was selected for the bursary for the initiation of a new program based on a ten-week photo-documentary project that will be showcased in two separate gallery exhibitions. The mandate of this program is to give youth the knowledge concerning how to research and represent their communities artistic past. Under the direction of AGYU’s Education Department, all participants will take photographs using disposable cameras in an effort to capture narratives of their communities, which are rarely documented in historic texts.

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia was awarded the bursary for their recently launched African Canadian and African Heritage Art Initiative. The key goals of this initiative are to increase the amount of African art in the gallery’s exhibitions, collections and public programming. The program also seeks to promote exposure and education to African Canadian and Africentric art which is sadly absent in many of Nova Scotia’s public art galleries, art programming and school instruction.
