2004 Youth Arts Bursary Recipients
Urban Shaman
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Urban Shaman was awarded funding for a mentorship program for inner-city aboriginal youth (ages 12-18) showing artistic promise. Each student was paired with an artists-mentor to guide them through the program, and worked with a variety of artists from the aboriginal community. In addition to developing their artistic skill, the youth learned how to present work to a gallery, write and artist statement, install an exhibition, and develop relationships with the media. The program ended with an exhibition of students’ work at Urban Shaman.
Ford City Discovery Centre
Windsor, Ontario
The Ford City Discovery Centre received the award for its mural arts program. Over a six-week program, students aged 8-14 years from Gordon McGregor elementary school were instructed by local artists in drawing and painting skills. The student demonstrated artistic promise and a passion for visual art, and the public display of their creation helps boost self-esteem of these fledgling artists. The Windsor Essex Children’s Aid Society commissioned two murals to create images that would evoke happy and peaceful feelings in the children who view them. The murals are visible from the supervised playroom and meeting rooms.
