Submissions for the 2010 Canadian Art Writing Prize are now closed
Established in 2009, the Canadian Art Writing Prize is designed to encourage new writers on contemporary art. The winner of this national competition will receive $3,000 and will be commissioned to write a feature story profiling a Canadian artist and his or her work. The story will be published in the winter 2010 issue of Canadian Art. Two honourable mentions will each receive $1,000, and the winners will be announced in the fall 2010 issue of the magazine.
Last year’s winner, Sara Mameni from Vancouver, says, “Being the winner of the inaugural award has provided me with a great opportunity to work with the editors at Canadian Art. I have learned a great deal about the process of writing for a major magazine, and the prize has allowed me to approach other magazines and gain greater exposure as an art writer.”
Jury member and Calgary critic Nancy Tousley says of Mameni’s work, “Sara’s point of view is that of an informed and imaginative viewer who shares her thoughts in the encounter with works of art in an engaging and immediate voice that illuminates both her experience and the work at one and the same time.”
The application deadline for the 2011 Writing Prize will be announced in January.
