Canadian Art

Spend an afternoon in Basel, Switzerland, on February 28

Released February 18, 2010

Join us at the Reel Artists Film Festival in Toronto on February 28 for two top documentaries about art in Basel, Switzerland.

At 1:00 pm, artist An Te Liu introduces Michael Blackwood’s film Two Artists: Andrea Zittel and Monika Sosnowska 1:1, in which Blackwood takes us on a tour of their exhibition 1:1 at the renowned Schaulager in Basel. The exhibition, which featured sculptures by Polish artist Monika Sosnowska and a comprehensive survey of American artist Andrea Zittel, demonstrates how both artists design spaces and respond to surrounding architectures, lifestyles and traditions. The exhibition title "1:1" refers to the resulting “parallel realities” as well as to the scale of many works—Zittel and Sosnowska often test the relationship of art and reality in life size.

At 2:30 pm, Canadian Art Foundation executive director and festival organizer Ann Webb will introduce the film Ernst Beyeler: Art Dealer, which tells the story of the legendary Swiss art dealer who was also a collector and founder of Art Basel and the Beyeler Foundation. The Beyeler Foundation building is an architectural masterwork by Renzo Piano, which oversees the immense, important collection that Beyeler and his wife Hildy built up over five decades. The collection features work from the 20th century by artists known personally to Beyeler, including Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, alongside tribal art from Africa, Oceania and the polar regions.

The 2:30 pm screening will be followed by a special Q and A between Ann Webb and Samuel Keller, head of the Beyeler Foundation.
