Journey through the world of visual art with the 2nd Reel Artists Film Festival in Calgary, March 25 to 28, 2010

This year’s Reel Artists Film Festival in Calgary presents in-depth views of some of the contemporary art world’s most respected and longstanding talents—from Antony Gormley, Yoshitomo Nara and Andrea Zittel and Monika Sosnowska to leading senior figures such as Canadian artists Françoise Sullivan and Takao Tanabe, both in their 80s. A film on Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is featured, as is a cinematic look at Louise Bourgeois, who is now 98 years old and continues to make work on a daily basis.

All films are free to the public and are screened at the Stanford Perrott Lecture Hall, Alberta College of Art + Design, 1407 14 Avenue NW. ACAD faculty and members of Calgary’s creative community will introduce several of the films.

Plus, for the first time, the Alberta College of Art + Design is presenting two related events.

From March 22 to 24, Winnipeg filmmakers Noam Gonick and Joshua Wade will present a scriptwriting workshop to help participants develop narrative skills. They will also discuss various approaches to the research and writing process when developing a film.

From March 23 to 26, San Francisco–based artist Mia Makela will give a three-day workshop designed to introduce participants to the practice of real-time audiovisual performances, from the capturing of video to the set-up of equipment and various software programs. The workshop will culminate in a public performance by Makela on Friday, March 26, at 5 pm in the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art + Design.

The Reel Artists Film Festival Calgary is presented by the Canadian Art Foundation in collaboration with the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art + Design.
