RBC Canadian Painting Competition Semifinalists Announced
RBC and the Canadian Art Foundation are thrilled to announce the list of semifinalists for the 10th annual RBC Canadian Painting competition—the largest prize of its kind in Canada.
The jury, comprising nine esteemed curators, artists and gallery directors from across the country, selected the shortlist from over 600 artists. In honour of the competition’s 10th anniversary, Governor General Michaëlle Jean will announce the winner in Ottawa this September. A national tour will then kick off at the National Gallery, followed by stops at seven art institutions across Canada: the Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal; the Rooms, St. John’s; Museum London; the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto; the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton; and the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver.
The works of the national winner and the two honourable mentions will become part of the RBC art collection to be displayed in RBC locations across the country.
This year, in honour of the Governor General’s patronage, the 12 semifinalists’ works will become a part of the Canadiana Fund’s Crown Collection and be displayed in the official residences including Rideau Hall, 24 Sussex, Stornoway, Harrington Lake (lac Mousseau), the Farm at Kingsmere, 7 Rideau Gate and the Citadel.
The national winner will receive a $25,000 prize, the two honourable mentions will each receive a $15,000 prize and, exclusive to the 10th anniversary event, the 12 semifinalists will each receive a prize of $7,500.
