Canadian Art’s under-40 patron group, the New Contemporaries, is launching its second year with a calendar full of extraordinary behind-the-scenes art events.
“The New Contemporaries events are very dynamic and engaging,” says member Anya Nikoulina. “We get to hear unique perspectives on the artworks that we see. This is a refreshing change from lengthy tours around large galleries.”
This year kicks off with a special New Contemporaries Open House on Saturday, September 25. Join us on a special walking tour with New Contemporaries organizer Andrea Carson as we visit a number of galleries, chat with dealers and artists and learn about the art on view. Afterwards, we will stop by Angell Gallery for the launch party celebrating Canadian Art’s fall issue.
Next up in October is a special VIP tour of Art Toronto, where we will browse selected gallery booths in the company of dealers from across Canada. At Canadian Art’s booth, we will meet Vancouver photo-based artist Evan Lee and editor Richard Rhodes will take us through “Canadian Art Now,” his daily exhibition that highlights Lee’s newest work among an exciting group of younger artists.
On the morning of Sunday, November 21, we will get an exclusive tour of a Sotheby’s auction preview at the Royal Ontario Museum. An auction expert will guide us through the preview, where we will examine paintings under black light, learn about how consignments are secured and find out what goes into the making of an auction. Afterwards, we will go for an optional brunch nearby.
Just before the holidays in December, members will have the chance to bring their friends to a private art-shopping event at Art Metropole, the legendary gallery, shop and archive where small-scale works made in multiple formats are for sale. Director Ann Dean will give us a special tour while we shop for gifts and browse the library.

In February, get an exclusive preview of the Canadian Art Screens (formerly the Reel Artists Film Festival) with a talk and screening by a documentary filmmaker. Then, join us for the festival’s opening-night celebration on February 24 and for the weekend-long festival of award-winning documentaries about visual art from the 25 to the 27.
Due to popular demand, in March we return to OCAD for another special tour with curator Charles Reeve. We will visit the production studios where we will see students at work, followed by a tour of the Onsite@OCAD gallery.
In the spring, the group will meet Paul and Wendy, a couple that sells affordable contemporary art prints and artist books. We will hear from one of their artists, and browse the works that they have on offer.
“What I gained from joining the New Contemporaries was an insight into the entire artistic process,” says New Contemporaries member Nancy Tran, “from the artist at work to the final piece displayed in a gallery. At OCAD, we got a sneak peek at the actual ‘production’ phase—not something that we would normally be exposed to.”
