An Insider View of Canadian Art Magazine
Thousands of people read Canadian Art magazine each month. But only a very few know what all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make this popular publication happen—not just for every individual issue, but through the course of a 25-year history.
On the occasion of Canadian Art’s magazine’s silver anniversary, video interviews were conducted with artists, curators and other key individuals about the magazine and the national art scene it reflects. Released today are three videos that delve into the magazine’s lesser-known challenges and triumphs.
In the first video, original magazine publisher Michael de Pencier describes how he created the magazine despite considerable odds, forming a partnership with Maclean Hunter before setting up as a not-for-profit publisher a decade later.

In the second video, current board member and past magazine sales director Wendy Ingram reflects on how far the publication and its publisher, the Canadian Art Foundation, have come since their inception.

In the third video, current Canadian Art editor Richard Rhodes discusses the evolution of the magazine’s content and design over the years. He recalls his desire to include artists’ voices in the early editions, and he explains how the new fall 2009 redesign builds on this tradition.
