Jens Hoffman
Director, Wattis Institute
San Francisco, United States
Jens Hoffmann is a writer and curator based in San Francisco, where he is the Director of the CCA Wattis Institute of Contemporary Arts and a senior lecturer in the graduate Curatorial Practice program at the California College of the Arts. From 2003 to 2007 he was Director of Exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, where he organized many group and solo exhibitions. He has written extensively on art and curatorial practice; his most recent book is Perform (2005), published by Thames & Hudson. Currently he is working on Showtime, a book outlining the history of exhibitions from 1989 to the present. Jens Hoffmann was trained in theatre rather than art history or curatorial studies, and has used his directorial knowledge to articulate a unique approach to curating. Of key importance in all of his exhibitions is the staging of the experience, from the design of the space to the conceptualization of the catalogue.
