Frieze New York: Taking it Outside

The Frieze Art Fair opened its first New York edition last week, in a novel and much-discussed location: Randallʼs Island Park, which required attendees to take either a ferry from 35th Street or a shuttle bus from Harlem. The weather was pendulously grey around the fairʼs large white tent, a “bespoke temporary structure” (the New York Times’ Holland Cotter described it as the “architectural equivalent of a white stretch limo”) designed by local firm SO-IL.

Canadian Artʼs art director Barbara Solowan was there, and she captured the scene around the tent, which was rife with artist work free for public viewing as part of the Frieze Sculpture Park and Frieze Projects. Highlights included Louise Bourgeois works hung from the trees; Latifah Echakhchʼs Tumbleweeds, which scattered the titular objects incongruously over the parkʼs lush lawns; Tim Rollinsʼ colourful, collaborative project with Kids of Survival (K.O.S.); and James Angus’ modernist sculpture, Concrete Cloudburst.
