The University of Lethbridge offers Bachelor of Fine Arts (Art) degrees with majors in Art Studio and Art History/Museum Studies as well as a Master of Fine Arts (Art).
Taught by active, contemporary artists and scholars, the programs offer intensive instruction in art study and provide the opportunity for students to engage in critical, theoretical and historical dialogue related to material practice and art history.
BFA (Art Studio)
You explore all areas of traditional and emerging art media - painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, computer-based art, audio art, video, installation, performance art, and digital and analog photography. As a third and fourth year student you get your own studio space. In advanced and senior studio courses you choose your professor - someone you want to work with and mentor you.
BFA (Art History/Museum Studies)
This is the only degree program in Canada to combine history and theory with extensive hands-on experience at the undergraduate level. As part of your program, you intern at the outstanding University of Lethbridge Art Gallery as well as local public galleries and museums to gain valuable experience.
MFA (Art)
Our MFA (Art) degree program offers the opportunity to pursue an advanced degree with faculty who are practicing artists and experts in the field, providing an environment grounded in a traditional fine arts education, while encouraging you to study broadly in the arts and to find your own creative voice. Spirited experimentation with artistic techniques, on a foundation of theory and critical thought, and the application of new technology are important and integral parts of the Faculty of Fine Arts. You can concentrate in one or more artistic disciplines or cross disciplinary lines, build a program of individual study, and synthesize your work into a personalized artistic expression.
U of L Art Collection
Learn from the originals using the University of Lethbridge's impressive art collection, which spans the 19th through 21st century with works from Europe, Asia, and North America.
Additional Learning Opportunities
- Gain professional experience by participating in the annual curated exhibition of student art.
- Meet more than 50 national and international artists, architects, curators, and designers who speak on campus every year.
- Participate in a vibrant and growing arts community including the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG), Allied Arts Council, U of L Penny Building Gallery, artists cooperatives, and more.
BFA (Art) with Minors in Management
By taking five classes as part of your BFA (Art) degree you can earn one of the following Faculty of Management minors: Marketing, International Management, General Management, Information Systems, First Nations Governance, and Social Responsibility.
To make your life easy we've set out a step by step process, which includes deadlines and everything you need to know to apply to the university and get all your documents together.

Steven Laurie, Zeke Moores, Brandon Vickerd / Lauren Hall
GALLERY ONE: Steven Laurie, Zeke Moores and Brandon Vickered are an artist-pit crew using the gallery as an ersatz garage. Their sculptures reflect on aspects of North American motor-culture from NASCAR racing to Survival Research Laboratories. "Clutch" contrasts the enduring appeal of the automobile with the paradox of a consumer culture running on empty.
GALLERY TWO: Using polystyrene, cellophane, coloured sand and scented glycerin, Lauren Hall transforms the gallery into a cave-like environment. Quoting the poetry of Percy Shelley, "With Crystal Column and Clear Shrines of Pearl" illustrates the way we now experience the sublime as a tourist destination.

Jon Rafman’s work enjoys a deservedly high profile at this year’s Contact Festival. As Saelan Twerdy observes in this review, Rafman’s stunning, and often funny, Google Street View scenes demonstrate how the Internet is making everything public, from information to intimacy.
The auction record for contemporary Canadian art was broken earlier this month in New York with Christie’s $3.6 million sale of a Jeff Wall photograph. This week, Canada’s top houses head into their spring sales hoping to break more records.

The history of indigenous people performing for colonial audiences inspires "Sovereign Acts,” a current Toronto group show. As Max Mosher writes, the show—featuring Lori Blondeau, Adrian Stimson and others—is both campy and contemplative.
Dil Hildebrand is one brave painter. In his new show “Back to the Drawing Board (Reprise),” he stares down the old adage that no one wants to look at a green painting, let alone buy one. There's not just one green painting here—there's a room of them.
